OverBorder Studio’s projectThymesiais teasing its audience with a new gameplay video, highlighting some of the upcoming title’s mechanics. It will be quite a busy year for Souls-like enthusiasts, with several new games fighting for the top spot in 2022.Thymesiais an action-role-playing game first announced in 2021, and set to release this year. Clearly inspired by mainstream titles such asDark SoulsandBloodborne,Thymesiaaims to distinguish itself enough in what is becoming a very crowded scene, featuring aesthetics and themes influenced by popular depictions of the Medieval Black Plague, a pandemic which devastated 14th century Europe.RELATED:Thymesia Gets PS5 and Xbox Series Versions, Delayed To 2022A new post on the developers' Twitter page featured a short gameplay video, showing the player character fighting two low-level enemies at once; highlighted is the locking feature, enabling the targeting of attacks upon the desired foe with a single press of a button. The characteristic fast-paced combat mechanics are evident, as is one of the peculiar mechanics of theThymesia, the absence of a stamina bar.

With the player incarnating Corvus, an amnesiac man fighting his way through dungeons and streets filled with the results of an alchemical plague, the premise does not appear, at first, to distance itself much from typical tropes of the genre. However, several things do stand out, such asthe introduction of so-called plague weapons, as well as the player’s ability to transform into a raven form. Moreover, standard weaponry, plague weapons, and raven form can be mixed and employed together.

The transformation ability and plague weaponry all lead to what is one of the main selling points of the game,an emphasis on deep build customization, and a key component of every Souls-like’s replayability. Absorbing plague power from the very enemies defeated and integrating it with classic weaponry in every way the player wishes promises to differentiateThymesia’s build mechanics quite a bit from FromSoftware titles.

It is clear that the biggest challenge forThymesiawill be surviving the comparison withthe much more high profileElden Ring, which is soon to be released. OverBorder Studio is doing much in that regard, putting the emphasis on its own blend of Souls-like featuring quick pace, a particularly gloomy theme, and original mechanics, but it is yet to be seen if it’ll be enough.

Thymesiawill release in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
