Summary
Star Wars Outlawshas dropped quite a bit of gameplay footage since its reveal. Not a lot of it has offered new content that earlier footage hadn’t shown, however, and nothing new can be gleaned from its story besides the fact that Kay and Nix have been companions since Kay was young.Star Wars Outlawscertainly runs the risk of being transparent to a fault at the moment with thinly articulated features and a core loop of stealth, but the game’s launch at the end of August still has a chance to prove that theory wrong.
Thankfully, that’s not all there is to look forward to inStar Wars Outlaws. Beyond its base game,Star Wars Outlaws’ Gold and Ultimate editionscome packaged with a season pass including two story-related DLCs. It’s unknown how expansive they will be or if they’re connected to one another and yet it’s a telling sign for the game’s narrative that it won’t close the book on certain events until after launch, assuming it does continue from whereOutlaws’ base game ends. But if there will be two story-related DLCs and presumably no additional playable protagonists, Kay seems guaranteed to make it out ofOutlaws’ golden path alive.
Star Wars Outlaws’ Season Pass Story Packs Suggest Kay Gets an Upper Hand
Arecent Game Rant interview withOutlawscreative director Julian Gerightystates that the game is “family-friendly,” but a character’s self-sacrifice for a greater good could still be Kay’s fate, especially if she’s fighting for a cause that she deems greater than herself by the end.Outlawshas made no attempt to reveal some underlying ambition of Kay’s aside from her trying to make it day by day, though, and maybe that’s as paper-thin as her character motivations will be throughout.
Either way, her death is made even more unlikely with two story DLCs inOutlaws’ season pass. Right now, the season pass story packs are only described as allowing players to “keep exploring the world of Star Wars Outlaws with all-new stories, quests and areas to discover” as per the game’s official website.
Another reason why Kay’s fate being unambiguous would be underwhelming is because the stakes that her crime syndicate-related adventures may have had are gone if there is no possibility of those scoundrel ties coming back to bite her in the end. For Kay to dabble in all ofStar Wars’ mostnotorious criminal organizations throughout the galaxy during the Age of Rebellion erawithout the threat of huge consequences is a letdown because it makes each syndicate that’s unable to challenge or defeat her less intimidating.
Outlawsdoesn’t necessarily need to conclude with Kay having enraged a rival faction or a particular group’s leader, butKay finding herself embroiled in the life of a scoundreland the lives ofStar Wars’ shadiest inhabitants should mean that it wouldn’t be so easy to make it out alive, much less not make any enemies along the way who want to thwart her happy ending.
Star Wars Outlaws’ Story Packs Don’t Necessarily Need to Feature Kay Vess
That said, it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility that Kay could die inOutlaws: one of these DLCs could be a prequel entry and thus feature Kay before her possible demise inOutlaws, for example, and one could feature a new protagonist. Knowing that there are two DLCs planned givesOutlawsan interesting post-launch shelf life and having that not include Kay would be absurd given how all of the game’s mechanics revolve around her and Nix exclusively, making a prequel chapter the more likely option of the two anyhow.
IfOutlawsis being developed with franchise potential in mind likeStar Wars Jedi, it’d make sense forMassive to invest fully in Kay and Nix—as well as ND-5, maybe—as its mascots like Cal Kestis and BD-1. Ultimately, if Kay and Nix are lured back via DLC it probably means they are unsuccessful in securing their earnings from whatever heist journey it is they carelessly decide to embark upon, and future story content will need a valid and meaningful excuse as to why they might still be at the mercy of the galaxy’s criminal underbelly.
