Mining Asteroids inStarfieldis actually incredibly simple. However, a large portion of players weren’t even aware they could even mine in space in the first place. This is absolutely fair, as the game doesn’t really let the player know that they can do this, and most just discover this feature accidentally by blowing up an asteroidin the middle of a heated space battleand then looting it afterward.

Starfieldis an exceptionally large game, this is by design, and pretty much anything a player might think is possible, usually is. So, let’s go over exactly how players who frequent planet orbits with tons of asteroids are meant to get those juicy resources they’re hiding in their cores.

How To Mine Asteroids

While waiting around in space for more ships to come by (and trade with) or more pirates/bounty hunters to spawn (and fight with), players can make much better use of their time by mining asteroids.

To do this, they first need to find either a planet’s orbit or an area of accessible space where there are asteroids nearby. After finding this area, simply start blasting away at the asteroids. Regardless of the weapons, once the space rock takes a certain amount of damage, it’ll explode, leaving a juicy nugget of resources for players to loot inside.Simply hit the ‘Interact’ input to lock onto the ‘Mineral Deposit’ then loot it from up to 500 meters awayjust like how players loot from the remains of destroyed spaceships.

Range Of Resources Found In Asteroids

In general, the rewards from blowing up these asteroids seem to be heavily favored towards both Water and Iron. However, that seems to vary depending on where the player encounters these asteroids. In some areas, players have reported finding Platinum in Asteroids while in others players can only ever find Water and Ionic Liquids.Overall, it seems that Iron, Nickel, Aluminum, Platinum, and Water are the most common resources found within these chunks of space debris. And, if players find themselves only being offered Iron inside each rock, simply Grav Jump to a different field of debrisand see if it offers different rewards.

The Verdict On If Asteroid Mining Is Worth It Or Not

There are quite a few different ways for players to steadily hoard resources inStarfieldsuch as buying them from Vendors, using Outpost Extractors to mine them, manually mining outcroppings of Resources with the Cutter, or looting them from defeated enemies and empty compounds.

So, compared to all those avenues, is the time investment worth it with mining Asteroids, or should players spend that time gathering resources another way? The short answer is that it’s typically worth it. The long answer basically amounts to the fact that asteroid mining doesn’t take long at all, so it’s worth blowing up at least a few asteroids whenever players come across themwhile jumping from system to system.
