During a discussion about Bethesda Softworks titles and development onStarfield, executive producer Todd Howard joined Art Director Matt Carofano and Studio Director Angela Browder to tease the upcoming title. Included with the teasers aboutStarfield, the trio also discussed the unique feel of Bethesda titles, the complexity, and setting of various video games, and the rewarding feeling of accomplishing new milestones in games of all sorts. While discussing similarities between Bethesda Softworks titles, Todd Howard teased thatStarfieldwill have more than one step out moment.

Step out moments in Bethesda titles have been mimicked by other games such as Nintendo’sThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Ubisoft’sImmortals Fenyx Rising.Fallout 3andFallout 4both have similar step out moments represented by the protagonist emerging from their respective vaults which preserved them during a nuclear apocalypse. The Elder Scrolls 4: OblivionandSkyrimstep out moments are also comparable as in the former, the protagonist is escaping a sewer network and in the latter, the main character is fleeing the dragon-ravaged Helgen.

During the development ofStarfield, Bethesda Softworks may be looking at ways to keep players engaging for countless hours just likes series' such asFalloutandThe Elder Scrolls. Todd Howard admitted to underestimating how long Bethesda fans spend in its worlds but stated that the company has always been creating worlds that would whisk players away. AlthoughStarfieldwill vary fromFalloutandThe Elder Scrollsin many ways, Howard suggested that it may have similarities like playing first-person, the ability to pick up and observe nearby objects more closely, and the dynamic world around the player remaining active whether or not they are.

“The mechanics of the (Starfield) world are entirely different,” said Todd Howard who explained one of the key differences between theupcoming Bethesda gameand its predecessors. “Technology has changed, we’ve all changed so our expectations have changed,” Howard continued, imagining a player loading up a game in anticipation of one of Bethesda’s step out moments. “Us being able to do that and have it feel new every generation and every game is something that is really special about what we do.”

Todd Howard’s aptly named step out moments are becoming a staple in videogames and instead of only offering one, Howard briefly teased thatStarfieldwill have two of these moments. While someSkyrimfansmay argue that their favorite RPG offered two step out moments before the release ofStarfield, Howard’s cryptic wording suggests thatStarfield’s two will differ in scope. If some of the other teasers are to be taken seriously, one of theseStarfieldmoments may be the first gravity-defying launch of a spacecraft.
