Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the screenwriter for the highly anticipatedStar Warsfilm directed by Taika Waititi, apparently has a bit of an unusual history with the series for someone who’s this involved. While she isn’t quite at liberty to discuss the upcoming film itself, she definitely appears to be the sort of writer who will fit well in a Waititi production.
UnlikeAndorshowrunner Tony Gilroy, Wilson-Cairns actually has been a fan ofStar Warsfor some time. Though she did have a rather unceremonious introduction to the franchise. In fact, the Scottish screenwriter’s first exposure to aStar Warsmovie almost didn’t take. So it wasn’t until later that she finally began to appreciate them as they are.

“Well, I came toStar Warsrather badly,” Wilson-Cairns said in an interview withIndie Wire. “I walked into the living room and my older brother Steven was watching [The Empire Strikes Back], ‘I am your father,’ and I was like, ‘What’s that?’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, this guy is his dad. He didn’t know and they’re fighting,’ and I was like, ‘Ah.’ So it was, shall I say, terribly ruined for me. I would’ve been maybe nine or 10 at the time.” While this certainly may have softened the blow of what might have been a big introduction, luckily it wasn’t her only shot to get ontheStar Warslove train.
“I suppose when I went to film school, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not really that bothered,'” she continued, “and then I saw it in the big screen in Glasgow. I watched it with the crowds and I mean, they’re pretty great. It’s very hard to not enjoy them. They’re pure cinema. So yes, I came to it badly and then I came to it later, but better. … It’s weird to come to that stuff late when it’s such a part of our heritage, but as long as you come to it, right?”
Wilson-Cairns’ resume speaks for itself, writing for hits like1917,Last Night in Soho, and her new Netflix dramaThe Good Nurse. Even so, many would love nothing more than to hear anything she has to say about the upcomingWaititi-directedStar Warsfilm, but she was staunchly (if jokingly) tight-lipped in that regard. “I cannot tell you anything, I’m so sorry,” Wilson-Cairns said when prodded for info in October. “I don’t know much. I’m working away in a bunch of projects and I find out what I find out, and I believe if I tell anyone, they’ll come to my house and kill me, and maybe my dog as well, which, I love my dog. He’s got to live!”
So for the sake of Wilson-Cairns' dog, it looks as though it’s best to look elsewhere for juicy details on the upcomingStar Warsmovie. Don’t worry, though. If there’s one thingOur Flag Means Deathstar Waititiloves to do, it’s show off whenever he does something fun and cool. There’s bound to be plenty of that when he finally makes his trek into a galaxy far, far away.
