The Irregularsis a new take on the classicSherlock Holmesstories. The trailer is heavy on the supernatural elements, including magic, prophetic dreams, and mentions of a rip between this world and the next. Despite its younger cast, the trailer also featuresmany standard elements of horror, like a twisted hand bursting out of the dirt, and does not shy away from showing blood or violence.

This wouldn’t be the first Netflix original series to include horror elements alongside a younger cast. The hit seriesStranger Things, which has a cast even younger than that ofThe Irregularswhen it began, is known for often being intense and frightening. The intensity of the show helped open it up to wider audiences, and the same could be the case forThe Irregulars. Netflix certainly believes in the new series, as it’s been renewed for a second season even before its premiere.

Sherlock Holmes has been adapted many times, most recently with Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC series and theRobert Downey Jr.-ledSherlock Holmesfilms. It’s been several years since a new installment of either, however, and it’s exciting to see a new take come to life on Netflix. Additionally,The Irregularsplaces its focus on its young cast rather than Holmes and Watson themselves, which is an interesting and refreshing change.

Last year, Netflix had success with a Sherlock Holmes film titledEnola Holmes. Based on the detective novels by Nancy Springer, the film starredStranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown as the titular heroine and younger sister to Henry Cavill’s Sherlock.Enola Holmesproved to be a successfor Netflix, with praise being given to Brown for her performance.
