In the stylistic teaser, fans ofThe Lord of the Ringstrilogywill recognize the various shots of Middle-earth as molten metal is seen being poured into a mold. Finally, the “precious” ring is formed, along with the title of the series in silver Elven font. A female voiceover is heard talking about the rings of power, and how they were divided, a direct reference to Tolkien’s books.

What is interesting to note is the mention of the “Dark Lord on his throne,” which is aclear reference to Sauron, the powerful villain from Jackson’s Oscar-winning trilogy. However, the next few lines in the epigraph from Tolkien’s books are skipped over, which fans will remember as, “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” Those words were spoken in Jackson’s films, establishing a direct connection.

According to the series' official synopsis,The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerwill be set thousands of years prior to the events of Jackson’s trilogy and is based during the Second Age of Middle-earth from Tolkien’s books. It “will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged.” The plot will explore the stories of multiple characters as they “confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Poweris set to become the most expensive show ever made for television. The first season alone is said to have cost an estimated $465 million. Filming began in 2020, but was severely delayed due to the ongoing pandemic.
