The Walking Dead: Destiniesis a ‘What If’ take on the franchise, letting players make choices that drastically change the events of the game while enjoying a third-person action-stealth game. One example of this is choosing to let Shane live through the events ofThe Walking Dead, instead of being killed by Rick Grimes. This also impacts gameplay because, as players lose or keep characters, they get access to different skills. All of these variations means that no two players may have the same exact experience, as the ending comes with over 150+ variations and three different possible bosses.

However, it should be noted that this is not 150+ unique endings. Game Rant recently spoke with Paulo Luis Santos, Game Director at Flux Games, aboutThe Walking Dead: Destinies, including how player choices impacts gameplay and the endings. And while this does not mean fans get a ton of distinct endings, as the narrative of the game closely follows the story of the first four seasons despite choices, it’s more than enough to show how much of an impact players can have.

It’s not uncommon for a video game to have a handful of endings that are then changed ever so slightly by some choice for a single character. That’s pretty much the case with the"What If" scenarios ofThe Walking Dead: Destinies, with Santos making it clear these variations are just very similar cutscenes at the end with different characters in them. While the ending may not shift drastically, who players take to the ending of the game does.

“We have over a whooping 150+ variations of the game’s ending due to the different character combinations that the player can end up with in the group by the end of the game…But let’s get expectations straight: this doesn’t mean that the game features that many unique, totally distinct ending cutscenes - you’ll be watching very similar cutscenes of the final moment of the game with different characters on them.”

Featuring different characters but keeping the narrative tied to the first fourseasons ofThe Walking Deadshould be a lot of run, regardless of how similar the potential endings actually are. That said, there are still a few ways players are rewarded. As Santos said, “When you get to the final level, there is a cutscene that shows your character roster - meaning those that survived the story because of your choices.” It’s emotional and gave Santos goosebumps, showing the end result of every choice players make to that point. On top of that is the fact that players face one of three different final bosses, depending on choices made throughout the game. As to what those choices are or what those bosses are remains to be seen, but fans of the show could perhaps make a few educated guesses.

“…One cool feature is that there are three different final bosses in the game depending on the choices you make in your playthrough!”

Ultimately, providing a “What If” take on franchise should be a lot of fun for fans of they show, as they can make their own choices and protect the characters they love most. For those who lovedShane inThe Walking Dead, it could show them what could’ve happened had he lived and made it to the end of season 4.

The Walking Dead: Destiniesis set to release on November 14 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
