Action adventure games look for the perfect balance between exploration areas and beating up enemies. Keeping the player engaged is harder than it looks, and if areas are poorly designed or enemies aren’t fun to fight, players won’t stick around long.

Tunicdoes a great job bringing players into its world and giving them good reasons to stick around. TheGuard CaptainisTunic’sfirst boss, confronting players when they’re still learning the ropes and serving as a test of the dodging and attack skills they’ve learned to that point. With another guard fighting at his side, theGuard Captaincan be an unexpected challenge. Here’s everything players need to know about cutting this boss down to size.
Guard Captain Basics
The Guard Captain is the first boss that players face inTunic. This boss is basically a bigger, recolored version of the ordinary guard mobs found in the surrounding area. Unsurprisingly, the boss doesn’t stand much of a challenge compared tosome of the difficult fights that will come later in the game. However, the Guard Captain is still capable of taking the player down if they aren’t careful.

Fitting his role as captain, this boss even has another guard with him when the fight begins. This guard can be taken down without too much difficulty using the normal combination of dashes and strikes that the player used to clear out the enemies in this area. The presence of the boss complicates things a bit, however. The two will often attack the player at the same time, and it can be difficult to dodge one while trying to fight the other. Making things worse, the player doesn’t havesome of the game’s best equipment yet.
How To Beat The Guard Captain
The first step for beating the Guard Captain is beating the guard mob that accompanies him. If the player lets this guard live and tries to focus on the Captain, it will become difficult to avoid their combined attacks and evade them later in the fight.Take the guard out first, dodging as necessary to create space between oneself and the guard captain to keepthis iconic foxalive.

There are a couple of stones located within the boss’s chamber that the player can duck behind if things get rough. The player can use these rocks either to dodge an attack or to take refugewhile they quickly rest and recuperate. The Guard Captain can chase the player around these rocks, however, so the relief they provide is brief at best. This is especially true later in the fight when the player is under the most pressure from the boss. The good news is that the Guard Captain has only a few basic attacks, none of which take particularly long to learn.
He has a basicSlashattack, sometimes accompanied by a second swing, that is easy to dodge away from. The boss arena is small, however, so it’s important not to get caught with one’s back to a wall and nowhere to dodge. More dangerous is hisStabattack, as it can hit the player from further than one would expect and does considerable damage. The best strategy is a simple one: avoid the boss’s attacks by dodging away as soon as the attack animations begin, then counterattack with a flurry of quick blows. Repeat the process andTunic’sfirst boss will soon be no more, letting the player seewhat else the game has to offer.
