WhileValheimrequires its players to explore the world around them and gather resources, it is essential to create a place to protect the variety of crafting stations within the game. This base will eventually become the subject of events or raids from the different bosses in the game making its defense crucial. For the new events brought on throughthe Mistlands update to Valheim, the developers also added in a new defensive weapon: the Ballista.
This impressively powerful weapon can hold up to 20 projectiles and ward off some of the game’s most dangerous creatures but has its own drawbacks. For those players looking to craft the Ballista and better defend their home inValheim, this guide is here to help.

How to Craft the Ballista in Valheim?
The Ballista can only be built with the game’s hammer and requires 10 Black Metal bars, 10 Yggdrasil Wood, and 3 Mechanical Springs. Building this becomes possible when players gather/create at least one example of these ingredients. The Ballista can then be placed on the ground or on top of a structure but will only function once players have also loaded it with one of its projectiles. As of this writing, there are just a pair craftableatValheim’s Artisan Table: the Wooden Missile (5 Core Wood and 2 Feathers) and the Black Metal Missile (1 Black Metal and 10 Wood).
The damage this device can deal is dependent on the type of missile it holds. The Wooden Missile has a Pierce damage stat of 75, 75 Staggering, and 45 Knockback. The Black Metal Missile has a Pierce damage stat of 120, 120 Staggering, and 60 Knockback. The major drawback for the Ballista is that it will attack anything in front of it and this includes the player that built it. For this reason the Ballista should always be loaded from the rear.
Where to Find the Ingredients for the Ballista?
The Ballista features ingredients that are only available to those that have reached the game’s latest biome, the Mistlands. Starting with Black Metal bars, players acquire Black Metal Scrap through defeating the Fulings that occupyValheim’s Plains biome. This ore then needs to be refined through an active Smelter in order to produce the Black Metal bars required.
Yggdrasil Wood can be harvested from the Yggdrasil Shoots that growthroughout the new Mistlands biome, but players need their axe to be at least Black Metal or better in order to chop down these trees. The final item required for the Ballista, the Mechanical Spring, can only be crafted at an Artisan Table. One spring costs 1 Refined Eitr and 3 Iron bars.
Valheimis available now for PC, and releases in early 2023 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
