[UPDATE: After a delay from Blizzard, it’s been confirmed that Mei will return to Overwatch on November 17 as part of the mid-season patch. The update should arrive around 11 am PST. Original story follows.]
On October 31,Overwatch 2developer Blizzard Entertainment indicated that it would be disabling Mei due to an exploit that was facilitated by her Ice Wall ability. This disablement is certainly not permanent, though, and indeed Mei is set to return to the game in due course. This guide is here to provide details on what is known about Mei’s return toOverwatch 2, and it will help players plan for the future.
Overwatch 2: When is Mei Coming Back?
Blizzard Entertainment states that it is targetingNovember 15for the return ofMei inOverwatch 2. Notably, this is the date upon which the game’s next update, which will make changes to several Heroes, is scheduled to release. Specifically, Sombra, Genji, Zarya, D.va, and Kiriko will all receive nerfs in the November 15 update, which should lead to a more balanced roster overall.

For those players that would like to know more about the exploit that led to the temporary disabling of Mei, it centered around using her Ice Wall to put a Hero into a position near a map boundary and then teleporting to that Hero with Kiriko’s Swift Step. This would causeOverwatch 2’s Kirikoto end up out-of-bounds when performed in certain locations, making it impossible for her to be targetted by opponents. While some players may feel as though Kiriko is the Hero that should be disabled in this situation, it is quite clear that some action needed to be taken.
To note, Mei is not the first Hero to be temporarily disabled since the launch ofOverwatch 2. Indeed, bothBastion and Torbjorn were disabled in Competitive Playon October 10, six days after release, due to bugs with their Artiliery Fire and Overload abilities. Those bugs, which made the two Heroes nearly impossible to deal with, have since been addressed, and Bastion and Torbjorn were returned to the game on October 25.
Blizzard was also forced to disableOverwatch 2’s Junkertown mapon October 19 “due to a bug that was causing graphic performance issues.” This bug centered around an object that appeared in the Attacker spawn, which could be attacked in order to mainpulate match participants' FPS, and it could be used by Attackers to get a significant advantage during the intial push. As with the Bastion and Torbjorn bugs, this one has also been squashed, and Junkertown was added back into rotation on October 25.
Overwatch 2is free-to-play for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
