One of the most exciting new feautres being added toWorld of Warcraftin its upcomingShadowlandsexpansion is Covenants. Players will be able to join a Covenant of their choosing, with each Covenant offering a unique story, rewards, and even abilities. But players have been stressing out overShadowlands' Covenants, as Blizzard decided initially thatWorld of Warcraftplayers wouldn’t be able to switch after choosing. However, Blizzard now appears to be reconsidering that choice.
As of the latestWorld of Warcraft Shadowlandsbeta update, changingCovenantsis incredibly simple and easy. All players have to do in order to join another Covenant is to go and talk to one of another Covenant’s ambassadors at a location named the Enclave in the region of Oribos. They’ll provide a series of questions, leading to the player dropping their current Covenant and joining the new one.

Blizzard does make sure that players actually want to leave their Covenant, though. It doesn’t want anyone leaving accidentally, erasing all of their potential progress in that Covenant’s variousprogression systems. In order to leave a Covenant, players have to click through five separate prompts. The prompts also switch back and forth in size and form, so the player doesn’t mindlessly click through think it’s a standard NPC conversation.
There is also an option to return to a Covenant, but the quest chain is currently broken so it’s unclear exactly how the process works. Wowhead points out thatWorld of WarcraftSenior Game Designer Paul Kubit has previously said rejoining a Covenant would be a challenge, so as to discourage swapping back and forth.Blizzardmay still be considering how best to go about this.
It’s also still unclear whether or not these changes will be preserved for the final launch ofShadowlands. It seems likely, but Blizzard could always change its mind in the months to come. With the feature now implemented in the beta, it seems very likely to stay, but with Blizzard andWorld of Warcraftchangescan come hard and fast.
Blizzard still has plenty of time to experiment with Covenants, of course.Shadowlandsisn’t expected to launch until later this year, so the ongoing beta will last quite a while yet. Expect to hear more information regarding how thefour Covenantsand swapping between them works in the months to come.
